| Methods |
Exposure to particulate matter and ultrafine particles is measured during commuting by car, bus and bike. Before and afterwards health measurements are performed. |
| Details |
During commuting people are exposed to air pollution. The level of exposure during commuting in The Netherlands and the related, short-term health effects are not well known. On 50 days, volunteers commute for 2 hours by car (diesel and petrol), bus (diesel and electric trolley) or bicycle (2 different routes). During the commuting, exposure to particulate matter (PM) and ultrafine particles is measured. Before and after the exposure we measure lung function, airway resistance, lung inflammation, we take blood samples for analysis on inflammation and coagulation markers, and volunteers fill in symptom questionnaires. The measurements are taken in Arnhem. The project is carried out in cooperation with the Public Health Services Gelderland Midden (GGD). The project is part of the programme 'Academic Collaborating Centres for Public Health'. |
