Type of project Research project funded by ZONMW

Time frame October 2008 - Otober 2012
Funded by The Netherlands Organization for Health Research and Development (ZONMW)
Short description
Aim
  1. To study the prevalence and incidence of non-specific symptoms in relation to actual and perceived exposure to EMF.
  2. To define the psycho-social factors which mediate or moderate the relationship between exposure to EMF and non-specific physical symptoms.
  3. To built a flexible model which could describe and explain the complex interaction among the underlying psychological mechanisms that might activate somatic symptoms.
Methods
  1. A pilot study using an existing data-set (N= 3600) in 22 Dutch residential areas (2006).
  2. A questionnaire survey (N= 7000) exploring the relationship between exposure to EMF, psychological factors and non-specific health symptoms. Study areas with varying distances to a base-station will be matched with registry data from general practitioners.
  3. Analysis of routinely collected health data on MUPS in relation to EMF exposure (AEM- to be developed by RIVM as part of the ZONMW program). IV. Aggregated health data are combined with survey data to minimize bias, and thus taking advantage of both study designs. V. Statistical approaches will include: Multilevel analysis, Before after analysis and Small area statistics.
Details

This study is an effort to fill the gaps of the previous research by combining a cross-sectional and longitudinal design, using questionnaire that includes perceived exposure and other psychological factors with registry data to determine the health outcomes.
