Short description
Aim

The aim of this study is to analyse the relation between long term occupational exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMF) emitted by MRI systems during their development, projection and testing, and acute, irreversible and/or delayed health effects, including neurocognitive effects.

Methods

In this cohort study occupational exposure assessment for MRI-related EMF will be based on (self-reported) job history, tasks, and recorded number of times a participant was voluntarily subjected to trials of MRI scan testing.

Health outcomes will be assessed through questionnaires and routinely collected data from periodical occupational health examinations. In addition neurological test batteries will be performed in a selected subgroup based on contrast in occupational exposure levels.

Details

The study population consists of a cohort of former and current employees of the MRI department of Philips Healthcare who, since 1984, completed at least two routine periodical health examinations and/or former and current employees who volunteered in MRI scan tests. A comparison group consists of the registered former and current employees of the X-ray department at Philips Healthcare who had at least two routine periodical occupational health examinations and who were not volunteers in MRI scan tests.
