Postdoctoral Education

Registration as Toxicologist

IRAS participates in the Postdoctoral Education in Toxicology (PET), which offers the participants the theoretical toxicological knowledge necessary for registration as a toxicologist. Information on the contents of the various modules of the PET, on course schedules, and on the tuition fees can be found on: http://www.toxcourses.nl/.

Conditions and procedures for the registration as a toxicologist are published on the internet site of the Dutch Society of Toxicology (NvT) under the menu of Vakgebied, Registratie Toxicologen at http://www.toxicologie.nl/.

Apart from the theoretical knowledge and skills, there are two paths for practical expertise leading to registration:

  1. the 'research' path
a number of years of experience in toxicological reasearch performed in recognized institutes with recognized supervisors.
  2. the 'applied' path
a number of years experience in applied toxicology (for official information see website of NvT) under guidance of a recognized supervisor.

More details on the requirements can be found at the website of NvT.

It is strongly recommended to report to the Dutch Society of Toxicology as early as possible, for an outline of the education programme and to appoint a supervisor.

The eventual registration is done by the Registration committee Toxicology of the Dutch Society of Toxicology and is also recognized by EUROTOX: http://www.eurotox.com/

Registration as Epidemiologist

It is also possible, for PhD epidemiologists, to obtain SMBWO registration as 'Epidemiologist'. Details on how to obtain this registration can be found at the website of the 'Netherlands Epidemiological Society' (www.epidemiologie.nl) and SMBWO (www.smbwo.nl). Additional information can be obtained from prof. Brunekreef, Professor of Environmental Epidemiology.
